Autumn Capsule Wardrobe

Monday, October 10, 2016

I loved my summer capsule and have to admit to feeling a little sad that I've put away some of the items until next year. I think it's been my favourite capsule so far.

An autumn capsule feels a lot like spring in that the weather could see warm days and cold, wet days.

I need to cover all bases. Many items from my summer capsule will remain, some have been in all three capsules so far are now making it a full house moving into the forth - my navy boat neck jumper, mid length navy cardigan, and a long sleeve stripe t-shirt.

I currently have 30 of my 37 items for autumn, I've left 7 slots open so I can add things as I go (and I have a shopping trip with Sophie coming up and we always come away with, ahem, a few purchases).

I've kept 19 of my summer capsule items, and have 9 items that have reappeared after being put away for spring and / or summer. So far I have two brand new items - my Next military coat and a long sleeved navy jumper that Andy gave me for my birthday.

I have 17 items that I've bought new, and 13 pre-loved items in this capsule, with most of my favourite pieces being from this category. One day I might add a made-by-me category...

The rules of this capsule wardrobe are simple:
- Pick 37 items from my wardrobe
- Store everything else away
- Accessories, gym clothes (ha!), PJs, and going out clothes are not included the capsule

There is a fourth rule, but it's not one that I seem to be able to stick too, and that's to stop all spending for the duration of each capsule, only making purchases at the beginning of each.

I'm quite relaxed about the rules. If I haven't worn an item I'm happy to swap it for something I feel I might wear more. I find this helps me to identify items that work in my wardrobe and those that don't, as a result I'm regularly popping items in a bag to go to charity.

I am looking forward to getting cosy in a few of my favourite jumpers, and it's time my scarves came out of hiding too. Happy autumn everyone!

Have you ever tried a capsule wardrobe? How did you get on?

  2. I love the pieces you have chosen! I read so many capsule wardrobe posts but I just don't think it's something I could do! I love my clothes with all my heart and wearing crazy patterned dresses is kinda becoming my thing, I fear I'd feel stripped without them? I do think I might do an experiment soon ...

    1. Thank you, they're basically all my favourite clothes. Which is a good place to start if you do ever put together a capsule wardrobe, you don't have to forgo your crazy patterned dresses - you can make a whole capsule out of them instead!

  3. I've been in t-shirts and sandals up to today but I've finally relented and got the long sleeved tops and socks out of the drawer.

    1. It's rubbish isn't it? I want to hold on to summer, never wanting it to be over. I love cosy jumpers and open fires but could happily live without them if summer could just go on, and on...

    1. I didn't think I could do it either but I got to the point where I was wearing so few of my clothes that it seemed daft to even have and keep them. I honestly feel that I wear more of my wardrobe now I'm doing this, but then I think you wear a far greater variety of outfits and utilise your wardrobe more than I ever did.

  5. I'm loving your metallic shoes in that top photo!
Your capsule items look very wearable and look good together, loads of options and variety.
I'm often photographed when I'm doing the fairs, recognised when I'm out and about by blog readers and the charity shop workers in the towns we visit tell me they look forward to seeing what I'm wearing - I have to have a massive wardrobe (well, two!) to keep everyone happy - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! xxx

    1. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a big wardrobe (or two!), if you wear it all, I found that I was just wearing the same few things all the time. It's allowed me to get rid of things that don't really suit me, or I don't really like. I still have plenty of things 'outside' the capsule that I've got no intention of getting rid of, but that will hopefully see their turn in a capsule at some point.

  6. I think you've chosen wisely, as they will all work together, so you won't get bored. I'm glad to read that you're relaxed about the rules though. Again, I admire your ability to put together a capsule wardrobe at all, as I don't think I could to it. I'm already having problems selecting items for my holidays ... xxx

    1. I haven't got bored yet and this is my 4th capsule :)
I love packing, as long as I know what the weather is going to be like...

  7. I really like the pieces you picked, and the colours are nice for this time of year too - it's nice to have the whites in with some more autumnal colours like the darker greens and khaki shades. I think I should try this at some point as I like the idea of only buying some essentials at the beginning of each capsule and then refraining from a spend throughout, unless necessary - I think that would help me with my budget too! I love your dungarees in the capsule here too! - Tasha

    1. It's certainly helped me to spend less Tasha, and like I say I still spend each month, I'm buying more consciously.
